The green light is a symbol for Gatsby's idealism. In the beginning of the story he is seen stretching his arms out toward the dock where Daisy's house is. He's reaching for something that he will never be able to get. He is holding onto what he had in the past, the love he felt for Daisy and she supposedly felt for him, but will no longer be able to obtain because it no longer exists. He just thinks it does.
